TOPIC: MINDS ON THE EDGE
MINDS ON THE EDGE - This media presentation that was aired on PBS is outstanding. It connects the dots between personal dilemmas facing individuals and families who are living with mental illness, medical practices that can be obstacles to treatment, and public policies that all too often fall short in providing support that could make a positive difference. MINDS ON THE EDGE explores the ethical dilemmas, real world scenarios, and unintended consequences that are playing out every day in living rooms and hospital ERs, in courtrooms and jails, as America struggles with the challenges of severe mental illness. Using the unique seminar format to consider a hypothetical situation drawn from real life, the program explores the personal nightmare of parents desperate to help their daughter get treatment when she develops mental illness in college. When she resists, what are their options? The program panelists also engage the challenging issue of the merry-go-round of homelessness and jail that has become all too common for many individuals who are living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other severe mental illnesses. The Fred Friendly Seminars have added a unique dimension to public affairs television programs on PBS for over 25 years, and spearheaded national outreach campaigns to help the public grapple with the complex dimensions of urgent social and public policy issues where there are no easy

NAMI Metro produces two forms of official communication: The print newsletter is published quarterly; winter, spring, summer, fall that is mailed to all members and organizations. It covers a variety of in depth articles that includes research, recovery, education, and the president’s message. The E News is published at the beginning of each month and sent electronically to all members who have an email address. The E News focuses on timely information such as general meetings, upcoming conferences, legislation, and policy issues.
