ADVOCATING, EDUCATING AND SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AND THEIR FAMILIES

NAMI Metro serves Oakland, Wayne and Macomb Counties in Southeast Michigan and we welcome you to our website.  We know that you will find us to be the place you will go for your mental illness information.

NAMI Metro is a 501 (C) 3 nonprofit, grassroots organization of families and individuals whose lives have been affected by serious mental illness.  In our efforts to improve the quality of life of those affected by severe mental illness we are ADVOCATES with a strong voice.  We advocate for quality and respect, without discrimination and stigma.  We provide EDUCATION and SUPPORT for our constituents and the community.

NAMI Metro believes that effective communication is essential to the organization.  The real worth of organizations is said to be measured by their societal impact.  Non-profit organizations, like NAMI Metro, keep democracy alive.  Communication is the key to setting in motion the actions and activities for any organization and the effectiveness of our internal and external communication strategies can be the difference between success and failure in meeting the NAMI Metro goals.  You will see in our website that NAMI Metro publishes a quarterly print newsletter along with a monthly electronic newsletter.

Comments from the President:

We will continue to build and update the website as resources permit to give you the user friendly site that will help you find the information you need in understanding and dealing with mental illnesses.

Please browse our site for further reference information and please pass along any suggestions for improvement that you may have. I would like to highlight a few pages that I believe will be very useful to family members, friends and consumers.

  • Resources. This page includes sections for various resources such as Education, Support Groups and information links to National, State and Local agencies.
  • FAQs. The Questions & Answers page attempts to answer in a general way most of the basic questions about community resources, government assistance, legal rights & obligations that family members and consumers often have when dealing with a serious mental illness.
  • Advocacy. NAMI Metro advocates on behalf of families and their loved ones that are struggling with serious mental illness. Take a moment to review this page to view current bills that we are watching on behalf of our members. These bills can impact your family’s ability to care for your mentally ill child or loved one. Find out what you can do to help advocate for improved quality of life for those affected by a mental illness.
  • Recovery. This page provides information, stories and perspectives about recovery as well as recovery programs.

Finally, we encourage you to visit the site regularly to get a quick update on recent announcements, news and general things that are going on relating to serious mental illness.

It is our sincere hope that this site will become a primary destination for our members, families, consumers and friends for the latest information on the care and treatment of serious mental illness.

Sincerely,

Leon Judd
President
